A variety
of activities were undertaken by the students which not only widened their
knowledge regarding poverty at the local and international levels, but also
provided them with opportunities to critically analyse the causes of poverty
and suggest remedial measures.
Groups of students conducted research on the
percentage of people below the poverty line in India, Bangladesh, Somalia &
Ethiopia. These students presented their findings (the situation of these
countries in the past, their means of alleviating poverty and the situation
after the adoption of strategies to fulfill the first of the Millennium
Development Goals) to the rest of the Higher Secondary Section thus increasing
the awareness of the students of the entire section regarding poverty and the
means of alleviating poverty.
The Economic and Social Council of the Good Shepherd Model United Nations (GSMUN)
provided the scope for a panel discussion during which the students deliberated
on the means to alleviate poverty in various cultural contexts.
Another set
of students visited the local villages and conducted interviews and surveys in
order to identify the causes and consequences of poverty. This enabled them to
ascertain the various aspects of poverty in the local context.
One of the most enriching experiences of the
students was when they undertook the responsibility of nurturing skills in the
underprivileged. While one group of students taught the locals the use of the
computer another group taught them
English. This activity is ongoing as the next batch of Grade 11 students has
taken up what their seniors have started.
